The three young girls, who were shopping at the Shine accessories shop in Kuta, Badung, giggled as they talked about their plans and hopes for the Valentine Day.
Karisma Dewi, Desi Eka and Novi Sintya, all in the seventh grade at the Sunari Loka Junior High School in Kuta, want to look their best when they celebrate the long awaited holiday on Saturday.
"We plan to watch a movie in Cineplex 21 after school and hang out together," Desi said on Sunday, adding that they were in the shop looking for necklace and other cute items to wear on the special occasion.
They said they were also looking for a present for their friends as their class would exchange trinkets to mark the day.
"I have not decided what to give yet. I am thinking of chocolate bars, accessories and a doll. Wait. What if a boy got the doll? He may not be happy," Dewi said, frowning.
She said she would accept any kind of gift she might get, saying that the most important thing was that the present was given whole heartedly.
Meanwhile, Novi said she hoped someone would give her a wooly pink heart-shaped doll and chocolate bars on Valentine.
"I don't have a boyfriend who can give me that kind of gifts yet, but I will be so happy to receive such a gift on the special day. It is meaningful," she said.
Among the three buddies, it was only Desi who remained calm about what gifts she would receive.
The 12-year-old said she was sure she would get a flower from her boyfriend at school, although she wondered the exact method the boy would employ in presenting the flower to her.
The students at their school have a habit of asking friends to deliver gifts and cards to sweethearts, Dewi said.
"It will be exciting to receive gifts in such a way. Usually the presents are exchanged during lunch time or after school," she said excitedly.
Other schools such as Dyatmika National Plus School and State Primary School 19 in Monang Maning, Denpasar, also plan to celebrate the occasion by exchanging gifts. Putu Sri Artini, a teacher at the Dyatmika School, said the junior high school plans to hold a secret admirer event, in which students will give presents to friends they admire.
"They *students* may order flowers or chocolate bars," she said.
Komang, a fifth grader at the State Primary School 19, said her classmates would go swimming with supervision from their teachers before giving each other gifts. Dewi said Valentine's Day was not only for couples, believing that it was the moment to literally share and show affection to the people she loved.
"You can celebrate Valentine's Day with your family and friends, or a boyfriend if you have one. In my family, we greet each other with a, "happy Valentine's Day" every year."
